You will explore painting materials and their  techniques.
The painting materials are

MIXED MEDIA

Mixed media or mixed materials, explores new ways of creating visual images by combining them in interesting ways.

AESTHETICS

What is art?  What makes art "Art"?

Who is an artist?  What is beauty?  Is it truly in the eye of the beholder? In this section you learn how to search for the answers to these  timeless questions.

ART HISTORY

Who were the first artists?

Who came before you and what did they do?  In this section you learn about the history of art.

READING & VOCABULARY 

Every artist needs to learn about language, so that he/she can express their thoughts not only visually, but verbally.  In this class, reading is the key to knowledge.

This class will examine Art concepts, the history of art as well as the materials and techniques used in the creation of art.  This class is a comprehensive study of ART that includes the following disciplines:

 

DRAWING

You will work with a variety of drawing materials and learn their techniques.

The drawing materials are graphite, color pencil, Conte, India ink, Pastel, scratchboard and Charcoal.

 

PAINTING

You will explore painting materials and their techniques such as watercolors, tempera, and acrylics.

 

ART HISTORY

Who were the first artists? You will learn about the history of art and how it applies to you as an artist.

 

READING & VOCABULARY 

Every artist needs to learn about language so that he/she can express their thoughts not only visually, but verbally.  In this class, reading is the key to knowledge.

The following is a breakdown of the school year.

 

First nine weeks

Drawing:  You will learn basic drawing skills.  Including rendering, perspective drawing and figure drawing.

 

Second nine weeks

Applying Drawing skills: You will explore color with a variety of drawing materials.

Third nine weeks

Painting: You will study and apply concepts, materials and skills used in painting.

 

Fourth nine weeks

Mixed Media: You will study and apply concepts, materials and skills used in mixed media.

 

MATERIALS

YOU MUST BRING YOUR MATERIALS and current Project  TO CLASS EVERY DAY.

You must take your art work home and bring it back for the next class. 

Do not leave your art work in school as there is no storage space for any art work.

You are required to purchase some materials for this class on your own. 

You are also required to pay $25.00 for additional materials that you will be provided in class throughout the year as the need for them arises.

You are responsible for purchasing and bringing the following materials. You must bring them to class daily.

 

  • Personal computer or MDCPS tablet

  • 8.5" X 11 or larger, Sketchbook 

  • 8.5" X 11"or larger Watercolor paper pad"

  • watercolor paint set, cakes or tubes with watercolor palette included.

  • Watercolor brushes one thin round and one thick round for washes. "Number 1 and 6 or 8"

  • Two sharpened Number two pencils

  • pencil sharpener

  • Colored felt pen marker set

  • Color pencils set ( Wood pencils, Prismacolor brand or better)

  • Black or blue writing pen

  • Ruler at least 12 inches

  • protractor

  • compass

  • right angle triangle

  • Large eraser

  • Lined notebook paper

  • Three ring binder used solely for the purpose of this class and not to be used in conjunction with any other class.

  • Dividers to be used inside the binder with the following categories

  •      Notes, Project guidelines, Art history, Vocabulary

GRADING SYSTEM

You are graded according to Project Guidelines. 

Every Art project will have specific guidelines that you must follow.  If you meet all the guidelines set for the project, you will earn an A. If you do not meet all the guidelines set for the project, your grade will be lowered according to how many guidelines you have met and the specific weight of each guideline.

 

The guidelines are independent of artistic or creative skills.  That means that if you feel that you can’t paint or draw, you can still earn an A for the project by following the guidelines.

 

The guidelines will be made clear to you at the beginning of each project.  It is your responsibility to write down the guidelines and to keep them in the guideline section of your Art Binder.

  

 

 CLASS RULES 

  • Be courteous and polite.

  •  

 Be in your seat before the late bell rings.

 

  • Stay in your assigned seat during class.

 

  • Listen to and follow the teachers’ instructions.

DO NOT USE YOUR CELL PHONE WHEN THE TEACHER IS TALKING!

  • You may use your phone for music or for searching for information on the web. Cell phone use falls under the "Bring your own device"  school board guidelines.

  • Work on your art assignment during the entire class period. Notify the teacher when you have completed your work.

 

  • Clean your work area/Participate in class clean up.

 

  • Wait until the teacher dismisses you at the end of class. (The bell does not dismiss you)

 

 

WARNING: Anyone caught throwing anything in class will have their

grade lowered one letter automatically

and their parents will be asked to come to school for a parent and teacher conference.  No exceptions will be made.

Please remember that you are responsible for your work space.

Any student leaving a dirty work space will receive an automatic two zeros.

 

As your teacher, I am happy and excited to work with you this year.  I look forward to seeing you create great masterpieces in my class. I know that you will enjoy the experience and that it will be one of the highlights of your years here at
